Tell us a bit about your family. – I’m fairly lucky, as a writer, to come from a family of artists, writers, actors, teachers, and historians. My mother’s maiden name is Gyllenhaal, and yes I’m related to those Gyllenhaals. The amazing thing about our family is that no matter how outlandish the thing we’ve been passionate about is, we have always encouraged each other. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a little support.
How do you work through self-doubts and fear? It’s not easy, let me tell you! I am full of self-doubt on a regular basis. The important thing is to remember why you are writing (or painting or dancing or playing a sport) in the first place. It’s something you love. And it may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes the best thing you can do to get over your fears is take a step back, breathe, rest, and build up the energy to rush into the hard work again.
What scares you the most? Never being able to follow my dreams. Being stuck in Corporate America forever! *LOL* That and yellow-jackets. *shivers*
What makes you happiest? It sounds a little trite, but it’s true: writing makes me happy. That moment when you are in the zone and the story seems to be writing itself is bliss. Aside from that, though, playing with my “friend baby” (my best friend’s daughter) and volunteering with children.
What’s your greatest character strength? I think it would have to be loyalty. I am exceptionally loyal to my friends and the causes I believe in.
