I’m married with three sons aged 4, 6 and 8. All are quite mad and all have changed my life out of all recognition…for the better, I hasten to add!
How do you work through self-doubts and fear?
Sometimes I don’t; sometimes I just stop working for a while until the urge builds up again and drowns out the voices in my head telling me to quit, that I don’t have what it takes. Ultimately writing is not a choice but a need that cannot be denied.
What scares you the most?
Death. I don’t have the easy crutch of religion so as a teenager I struggled with the questions of immortality and the ultimate futility of all life. Then the kids came along and I stopped worrying about me and started worrying about them. Besides, when the kids were born I realized that I had fulfilled my ultimate destiny.
What makes you happiest?
Happiness doesn’t exist. My work gives me satisfaction and my family give me an underlying contentment, and I think that’s all anyone can ask for and more than most people receive.
What’s your greatest character strength?
I have great mental strength and can bounce back from almost anything. Most of the time! Sometimes things get too much for even the toughest of us and we need a time out to feel a bit sorry for ourselves.
What’s your weakest character trait?
That’s something others should answer, not me, but mental strength is just the other side of the coin of emotional coldness, so my greatest strength and my greatest weakness are probably the same trait, just in different circumstances.
Why do you write?
Because I have to. It’s a compulsion I’ve had all my life.
Have you always enjoyed writing?
Writing is a release and an escape all in one. I don’t know why but I’m always happiest when I’m writing; it fulfills me.
