*Have you always enjoyed writing?
English class and art class were always my favorites. Until junior high I hadn’t written more than those five paragraph essays so beloved by English teachers everywhere. Then in eighth grade, I was assigned to write a “love” story for the school newsletter. It was hit and the rest is history.
*What motivates you to write?
As of late, helping other writers is my motivation. My mission is for writers to rule the world. No one should work for free and all of us should charge our worth. I can get pretty worked up about it. I’ve gone so far as scolding ad posters on Craigslist who offer no pay, yet they want “someone experienced.” No writer should have to work for free or for peanuts. That’s what I hope “Trials” teaches people. Writing is a business just like anything else.
*What are you most proud of in your personal life?
I moved to NYC by myself and made it on my own. It might not seem like a big deal, but if you can conquer NYC, you can conquer anything.
*What books did you love growing up?
Sweet Valley High and The Babysitters Club were always in my hands. Absolutely loved them. Also Ramona books by Beverly Cleary and anything by Judy Blume.
*Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?
I grew up in a tiny Wisconsin town. Now I live in Minnesota by way of New Jersey.
*Where do you get your inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from everywhere. I love movies and I’ve been known to have a notebook handy at the theater. My ideas could have nothing to do with what I’m watching, but movies allow my mind to wander, if that makes sense. Even overhearing a stranger’s conversation can trigger ideas for me. I also do yoga a lot to de-stress and clear my head.
*What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?
I think they can all be relatively difficult, but for me marketing was a surprise. I know it would be a lot of work, but it has become my full-time job after writing.
*Do you plan to publish more books?
Absolutely. My second book is actually due to release in the next couple of weeks.
