Author Interview – Kim Cano

Tell us a bit about your family. I’m married and have no children. Owned by one cat who rules the household. I’m serious. He won’t let me sleep if he wants to be fed at night. He’ll stand on my back, all 13 pounds of him and meow, and then if he’s ignored he’ll tap my cheek repeatedly with his paw until I get up and feed him. Even then there’s no telling if he will like the can of food he’s been given. He’s a furry dictator.

What is your favorite quality about yourself? Courageousness. I’m not afraid of much, except for sharks. I’m not buying that whole if you just leave them alone you don’t have to worry because they’re more afraid of you line.

What is your least favorite quality about yourself? I’m a weakling. My old boss used to call me her “fragile flower.” My best friend bought me an electric jar opener for my birthday. I know. It’s sad.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? There are so many, most of them philosophical in nature, but my perennial favorite was something I saw on a bumper sticker once. It said: Dear God, please save me from your followers. I don’t know who wrote that, but I loved it. Offbeat humor gets me every time.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? That’s a tough question. I guess it would have to be maintaining a reasonable level of sanity while dealing with all of life’s ups and downs.

What is your favorite color? Burgundy

What is your favorite food? Dark chocolate orange sticks from Trader Joe’s.

What’s your favorite place in the entire world? Bora Bora

How has your upbringing influenced your writing?  I think every experience we’ve had either ourselves or have seen someone else have shapes us and our writing.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? Every week, while grocery shopping with my mom, I’d sneak off to the aisle where the Little Golden Books were sold. She’d end up finding me there, sitting on the floor, reading. That was back in the day when it was still safe to let your child roam and climb trees and stuff.

When and why did you begin writing? I have always been writing. English was my favorite class. I have always liked to read. I guess it was a natural progression.
