Author Interview – Deborah Jensen

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? When I was in third grade my interest in writing began.  I wrote a poem for a school assignment and my teacher encouraged me to enter it into a Red Cross Magazine contest and the poem became published.  From then on, writing has always interested me and my life-long goal was to become a published author.

How much of the book is realistic? There is a fair amount of my novel that portrays real life characters and experiences. The main character, Kim, visits her parents in south Texas at their retirement home.  Nita and Jack, Kim’s parents were inspired by my own parents. In fact my daughter is having a hard time finishing the book because it reminds her so much of her grandpa.

Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot? In Beyond Escape, yes there are several real life experiences that are featured in the book, including the presumed murder that takes place.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? Not at this point, but I do have plans to as my readership expands.

Have you ever considered anyone as a mentor?  As a young adult, I wrote mainly children’s books. At that time, I had a mentor, MaryAnn Weidt who was an accomplished author of middle grade chapter books.  She started a writers group for inspiring new authors and gave us opportunities to expand our writing experience. She led our group, took us to conferences, and organized our own workshops. She gave me encouragement to continue my writing even when I was at the point of giving up.
