This moment in
my novel takes place in Switzerland when Sol (the father) takes Jules(the
daughter) to see where he went to medical school. Jules is astonished
that her father went to medical school where he didn't initially speak the
language. Sol emphatically tells Jules that she is capable of doing
something like that and much more, if she wants to. This is important
because later, Jules must decide whether or not to go to Paris, even though she
doesn't speak French.
Additionally,
Sol relays a funny short story from his medical school days. A man he was
in school with did not have the same discipline to learn the language and never
succeeded in speaking French, even though his family did. The son is
yelling at the father, in French. The father is asking his wife what the
child is saying. It is a commentary on life and what success is defined
as for each of us.
