“You’re going to say it’s a hard life down there. You’re going to say they need the humor to balance it all. Don’t you think I know that? I saw Jasmine in her Em life. I saw it all, remember? You let me.”
“I’m
sorry. You shouldn’t have seen any of it.”
Elspeth’s
eyes narrowed. “Don’t you dare treat me like a child. I wanted to see. I pushed you to break the rules and let me see. And
I’m glad you did. Glad! Do you hear me?”
I
had never seen my sister so enraged. “Elspeth. Please. Calm down.”
Tears
filled her eyes. “I just wish—”
“Yes?”
We
both spun around to see Mentor approaching rapidly. “Nothing,” I managed to
sputter.
Elspeth’s
mouth was drawn in a tight line. “I wish we had more fun,” she blurted.
“Fun?”
Mentor smiled indulgently. “We, my dear girl, are far above fun.” She patted Elspeth on the shoulder.
“No,
we’re not,” Elspeth muttered belligerently to Mentor’s departing figure. “Would
do us some good.”
